The public school education system impacts the extent of unity and division that the United States goes through. There are many problems that divide it, such as segregation, race, ethnicity and socioeconomic status. According to a 2022 article by the National Public Radio it states that “The U.S. student body is more diverse than ever before. Nevertheless, public schools remain highly segregated along racial, ethnic and socioeconomic lines”. The challenges of low funding and local property taxes have made it difficult for public schools to offer the same education to those who live in higher income neighborhoods. In some ways similar to how many people in the mid-nineteenth century did not have the financial access to attend or receive education in a suited classroom environment. Privilege and Power is a very important factor into what kind of education someone has access to. If our country’s leaders, governors and people in power could give more funding to public schools it would be different but unfortunately there is not much funding. Attached below is a very insightful video named "why are schools still so segregated?" that provides more information on this topic as well.
Furthermore, There are many benefits of the public school system that unifies us as well, even if it is not as perfect as we would want it to be. In some ways it offers more diversity as well as it provides more people moving into neighborhoods. In Part One of “The Common School” Kaestle quotes '' as people migrated… they found their towns, they invested their money in those locations and then they hoped that their town would be a success. It was important to them to have something to offer settlers and attract them, 'and a school was a very important institution that they could offer. Many still immigrate to the United States to have access to public education. Many immigrants who immigrate to the United States provide tax money and more business that help the economy and funding schools.
Moreover, school has shaped and defined the lives of the American public by providing us with education, income, careers and its preparation for it, cultural and social movements, history, diversity, socialization and more opportunities. School offers us literacy and knowledge, this way we are prepared for our futures as it is important to prepare for our careers in order to succeed. Many join clubs, sports and extracurricular activities that expose them to new people, new ideas and cultures apart from the common curriculum. As well as providing us with help from advisors who help us reach our goals or give us more opportunities. There are many opportunities like internships, traveling abroad trips or museum trips and educational programs that schools offer. These types of education trips and programs impact students because it is something they will remember for the rest of their lives.
In conclusion, school has shaped and defined my life in many important ways. I have met all my friends through school classes, activities, clubs, sports teams and school friends. I was able to meet a lot of people throughout my education. This networking provided me with much more job and internship opportunities as well. As well as preparing me to be where I am right now, in college as a first generation immigrant. This has opened doors for me to receive income which is an absolute human need and building a career for myself. Being here and having access to school is a privilege in itself, if I had stayed in my country I believe I may not have gotten any education at all. My life would be completely different without the education I had access to while being here.
