BLOG ASSIGNMENT PART III

Reading part III of the book School: the story of American Public Education, watching the documentary and discussing these topics with my group there are many things that have shown us how important it is to stick together as a community. Therefore I do not believe that separate but equal is a viable option in the education system today. It creates a bigger separation and creates more segregation. Minorities who live in low-income neighborhoods will be affected the most since there wouldn’t be good or higher education options for them. We can not create a fair system without an equal system, being separate but equal does not go hand in hand. Many people believe many of these minorities who come from lower income neighborhoods simply do not want to go to school but there are many factors that affect their motivation and goals to complete school. Some factors include not having money for school lunch, transportation, school trips and school materials. Further into this, these are the people who are constantly struggling to survive and when there isn’t enough money it affects the whole family and children’s mental health. When there is access to the same programs, education and resources as the ones many in middle-class families get, there are more chances for others to succeed and graduate as well. Which is why we need to have equality.

This is a course we should pursue as a society, history is important and without any knowledge of our history we wouldn’t be able to see how much more we can improve and what to avoid to create a more progressive system. I believe not many people today think about how education was accessible to them and how public schools were created. Literacy overall is important, with this course we are prepared to acquire opportunities that lead to better finances, education, relationships and making better decisions that are vital to our society and future generations. Without literacy we would not have the knowledge to acquire job skills that lead to better opportunities and paths to have a stable job that offers more financial stability. As well as not being able to communicate with the rest of the world and people we meet throughout our lives. It is vital to create stronger relationships within our communities to combat many of the problems we need to fix to create a better education system. Throughout my readings, I have learned that when we stick together and communicate more effectively we can all find ways to create a more fair system and advocate for ourselves. Which ties into civic life as well, when we are more informed and have the skills to think, read and research we are all more educated. We can vote for better changes, better politicians and create new laws, therefore we can all advocate what is best for everyone to create a fair system. Without any of these skills and knowledge we can not create a society that thinks for themselves and learn how to come together to make changes. For health we are better informed on what available resources we are able to use, our rights over our bodies and overall keeping ourselves healthy by being informed.
