Module Four Part IV: Blog Assignment
While school choice can provide autonomy and flexibility, like creating more targeted programs to help certain students, more resources and more parent involvement it is critical to develop strong accountability systems to preserve educational quality and guarantee that public monies are used wisely. Although overall, school choices do not improve public education, from the years that Public school has been accessible it has, yes, brought us all more opportunities and a form of education provided for us. Those of us who had the privilege to attend school and graduate have gained knowledge, skills and literacy and it has helped us become who we are and what we are able to do. Although it has not been the best and in some cases really terrible to the minority group.
The choices made throughout the years create segregation and inequality. Rich/middle class families have better access to resources and they are the ones making all the decisions that benefit them and not the ones who are being left behind. When creating other public schools or charter schools for these rich/middle class social groups they are the ones getting the best forms of education, programs and resources that weakens the public school system. Selecting students based on their academic performance is unfair, due to already picking out the students who have the privilege and resources to be able to have a high academic performance. There are many factors that can affect students' academic performance and it is not just based on their intellectual abilities to do so. There are factors outside of the school system like learning styles, family stability, mental health disorders and socioeconomic status ( poverty affects families tremendously) that affect students ability and motivation to achieve a high academic performance. Having life stability creates a better life and more success opportunities because our only focus is our academic performance. If someone is struggling with family problems or money problems, they are not able to focus on school and have external worries and stress that impact their academics.
When we spoke about why community is important this all ties into this, because creating separate systems and schools will only divide us more. Everyone deserves a good education but it shouldn’t mean that only one group gets the “best” meanwhile the other group is left behind which affects their whole livelihood and future success. We are not helping people become the best person they can be to find their passions, skills and what they’re best at in their education. Most times the schools that these rich/middle class families are wanting to put their kids in are only including white people. This offers no representation, limited perspectives and cultural disconnection. This is all needed to thrive in the modern world. We are able to meet many people with different cultures and backgrounds and learn how they view the world. When children become adults and start their career they will be working with different people and it creates a better way of understanding to collaborate. As well as being aware of social justice and their own privilege.
